Growing dahlias from seed is the best garden mystery as you never know what you’ll get! While dahlia tubers create clones of plants that grew the season before, dahlia seeds will create brand new plants.  Dahlia genetics are so varied that even seeds from the same plant will produce vastly different flowers, no two will be the same! Most of the flowers will have open centers attracting tons of pollinators to your garden. At the end of the season, that little seed will have produced a tuber clump that you can store and grow the following season.

All of our dahlia seeds have been open pollinated and collected from a varietal parent plant. The rest was up to the bees :)

Each seeds packet has at least 15 seeds.

GROWING INFORMATION:

For best results, start indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost date. We pre-sprout our dahlia seeds in a damp paper towel in a warm area, but you can also start them in moist seed-starting soil. Plant them ¼ inch deep. Germination is sporadic, anywhere from 3 to 18 days, so be patient with your seeds. Don’t keep them too wet or they will mold. Germination is around 75%. Once all danger of frost has passed, plant your dahlia seedling up to their leaves after hardening off. These young plants are very tender, so we wait 2 weeks past our last frost date to plant out. Dahlias are heavy feeders so be sure to feed all season long.

Dahlia flowers do not continue to open once harvested, so be sure to cut them at the stage you wish to enjoy them (usually ¾ of the way open).  Recut the stems and change the water daily to extend their life. Expect a vase life of ~5 days

Plant spacing: 9-12 inches apart in full sun (at least 6 hours daily)

Dahlias will branch if pinched at 12 inches tall

100-120 Days to Maturity
