About our Dahlias

All of our dahlias for sale will be a tuber OR a cutting. We have very little stock and while we plan to ship out only tubers, we are working with perishable items and a cutting will be supplemented if need be.

We pre-sprout every tuber to be sure of its viability if an eye is not already visible at shipping. We do so to guarantee the plant is healthy and will grow for you if planted correctly. Because of this extra step we take, we will not issue refunds for tubers that you do not have success with due to grower error. Our tubers and cuttings are living plants, and if not planted or cared for properly they will perish. Each order ships with a growing guide to set you up for success, but environmental factors and gardener error can determine your outcome. We cannot be held responsible for tubers drying out, rotting in storage after you've received them, improper planting, weather issues, pests etc.

If you receive a tuber with a small shoot, that is normal. If your tuber has a small shoot on it which has been broken off, that is ok, a new one will grow in its place. If you see any issues with your order, please email us with photos immediately, within 1 week of arrival, and we will do our best to remedy the issue. If you are picking up your order, you must inspect the tubers/cuttings before leaving the shop. Once tubers and cuttings have been taken home no refunds or exchanges will be permitted.

While we take diligent notes all season long to guarantee each and every tuber and cutting is the correct variety, mistakes can happen. If your dahlia flowers and is the wrong variety will we gladly refund you. While this is a very rare occurrence, we want to be upfront about the rare possibility. We are, however, unable to refund the shipping costs, but will offer shipping free of charge for the following season.

When digging our tubers, if we lose a tag or the varietal name is not 100% clear to us, we will mark them as mystery. Our mystery tubers are all varieties we love and grow on the farm, but are just accidentally unlabeled, hence the large discount!

Our tubers are all varieties we grow or plan to grow ourselves - they have not gone through expensive virus tests. These tubers are free of diseases and viruses to the best of our knowledge and are the exact same tubers we grow on our own farm.

We do our best to showcase what each variety looks like with the photos attached but slight variations in colour, plant height, etc. can happen due to different growing conditions. Photos are either taken by us, or chosen online to best showcase the variety.

What to do when you receive your tubers/cuttings

As soon as you receive your tubers, open each bag and inspect them immediately. Email us with photos if you see any issues. Since the tubers will be out of storage, you’ll want to leave the bags open to allow airflow. You can pot the tubers up in potting soil when you receive them to get an early start on the season. Make sure to keep them in bright sunlight or under grow lights. Don’t water your tubers for the first week as too much moisture can cause them to rot.

If you’re not ready to plant when you receive them and want to store them, keep them in a cool, dark place where there is no chance they will freeze. Ideal temperature is between 4 and 8 degrees celsius. Reseal the bag to keep them from drying out and store until you're ready to plant them outside.

If you receive a cutting, treat it as a young living plant. Be sure to keep it well watered and in a warm, bright, sunlit place.

We will have a few other selections we will bring with us to the May Toronto Flower Market once our Tubers have warmed up and cuttings are taken. We will also have a variety of seedlings for sale as we always do.

Planting your dahlias

We wait a full week once all danger of frost has passed, and plant out once the lilacs have bloomed in downtown Toronto, usually the 3rd week of May to early June. Be sure to watch the weather closely in your area and your local gardening resources to determine your last expected first date.

Choose a well draining, full sun (at least 6-8 hours) location in your garden to plant your dahlia tubers. Poor drainage can cause your tubers to rot - avoid areas where water pools after a rainfall. Do not overwater!! Watering too much or planting into wet soil can cause your dahlia to rot or fail to bloom.

Prepare your garden bed with 2-3 inches of compost or manure and a balanced organic fertilizer. We recommend a 5-5-5 or something lower in nitrogen like a 5-10-10. We do not use, or recommend using, any herbicides or non organic amendments. We also add a sprinkling of bone meal. Make sure the ingredients are well mixed in that top few inches. We do not till our soil but rather add fresh soil and nutrients on the existing garden bed and allow them to sink in naturally over time.

Plant your tubers sideways with the eye or shoot facing the sun. Plant them 6 inches deep and 12-24 inches apart. If you are planning on cutting from your dahlia plants often you can place them closer. If your dahlia has been pre-sprouted, it is ok to cover the shoot with soil. Your tuber needs to be planted deep enough and the shoot will continue to grow out of the soil. Throw some bone meal on top of the soil once the tubers have been planted. This is a helpful fertilizer for tubers and also helps keep pests away.

Do not water until the plants are growing out of the soil. This could take 1-10 weeks depending on the dahlia variety. Once the dahlias are growing out of the ground they require deep watering, enough to reach the tuber 6 inches deep.

When planting a cutting, water well immediately and treat it as a seedling.

We recommend staking your dahlias at planting. Plant a stake into the soil beside your tuber and tie the plant to it as it grows to help with stability. If you are growing multiple dahlias you can plant multiple stakes and corral them together.

Be on the lookout for slugs and snails as your dahlias start to grow out of the ground. If damage is found, add slug bait, copper tape or beer traps to keep slugs from damaging these young plants.

If planting in a container, use a 5-7 gallon pot to allow the plant to reach full maturity. You will need to water the plants once established. Plant and stake in the same way you would in the ground.

Pinching young plants is not necessary but will help create more branching arms on your dahlia, meaning more flowers! Once the plant is 1-2 feet tall, snip off the top 3-4” on the centre stem. Be sure there are at least three sets of leaves before pinching. Pinching results in plants blooming slightly later, but will give you longer stems and more blooms overall.

Thank you and happy gardening!!!
