Zinnias are one of the easiest annuals to grow and one of the most rewarding! Zinnias produce armloads of cut flowers, from early summer to late fall, and are favourites of pollinators. Our zinnia seeds are chosen from some of our favourite blooms but the colours, shapes, and sizes of the flowers you will grow will be incredibly varied.
All of our Zinnia seeds have been open pollinated and collected from our urban farm.
Each seed packet has at least 20 zinnia seeds.
GROWING INFORMATION:
For best results start indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost date. Start seeds ¼ inch deep in moist seed starting soil and keep moist. Germination is very quick, 3-5 days. Keep seeds moist and use a humidity dome if possible. Remove humidity dome and bottom water once seedlings appear. Germination is around 90%. Can also be directly seeded into the garden.
Once all danger of frost has passed, plant your zinnia seedlings out after hardening off. These young plants are very tender, so we wait at least 1 week past our last frost date to plant out. Zinnias are very tough, they thrive in full sun and can tolerate a drought.
Zinnias need to pass the ‘wiggle test’ before being harvested. Gently wiggle the flower stem a foot from the bloom while on the plant. If the head of the bloom doesn't wiggle, and the stem is as straight and strong as a pencil, it is ready to be harvested. For best results, recut stems and change their water daily. Expect a vase life of ~5-7 days.
Plant spacing: ~9 inches apart in full sun (at least 6 hours daily)
Zinnias will branch if pinched above 3rd set of leaves
70-90 Days to Maturity
